Hawkman meets the Pied Piper in Flash Comics 59 (Nov. 44).
Picture Stories from History begins in this issue, with a story by Max Gaines and Don Cameron, the same month the series launches in Sensation Comics and Comic Cavalcade as well. There had been a try-out story, about Balboa, the previous year in Comic Cavalcade.
This installment deals with Leif Ericson and his voyage to North America. It gets the usual things wrong about the vikings, showing them with horned helmets and such.
Moldoff’s art has declined consistently on this series. I didn’t even realize this story was by him at first. But the Fox story is reliable as usual. The Pied Piper is in this tale, having fallen asleep, Rip Van Winkle-style, for centuries, waking in the present day.
Carter and Shiera see him charming animals with his music, and take him in. The Piper unwittingly puts some thieves under his spell, under Hawkman breaks in. The hoods realize the power that the Piper has, and force him to work with them.
Hawkman and Hawkgirl battle the thieves, and once the Piper sees them winning, joins forces with them. In the end, they get him a job at a jazz club.
