Kesel, Ordway, Grummett and Rodier continue with the Silver Age reality in Adventures of Superman 559 (July 1998), having a lot of fun with it.
The issue begins with Superman foiling Brainiac’s latest scheme, with the aid of Maggie Sawyer and Dan Turpin.
Returning to the Daily Planet, Clark discovers that everyone now has super-powers. People are quick to don costumes and begin fighting crime on their own.
Even the cloned Newsboy Legion get into the act.
Metallo shows up, using his kryptonite heart to take down all the super-powered people. But Turpin, who didn’t want the powers, was not affected, and disarms, or dis-heartens, Metallo.
Mr. Mxyzptlk was responsible. Who else could have done it? And Superman tricks him into saying his name backwards.
The issue ends with a scene that hints at the larger storyline, with the little girl interrupting Superman and Lois, and clock striking.
